We always say: use your sponge dry. So many of you ask us if it can get wet at all.
It can. Washing it properly is how it keeps working well for months. It takes about two minutes.
How to wash it
- Rinse it. Hold it under lukewarm water and gently squeeze it so the water soaks in.
- Add a gentle cleanser. Baby shampoo or a mild soap works well.
- Massage it. Work the soap through in small circles, squeezing gently as you go.
- Rinse until the water runs clear. This takes longer than you think.
- Repeat if you need to. Still see makeup? Wash it once more.
- Dry it completely. Gently squeeze out the water, but not so hard that the sponge loses its shape. No twisting or wringing. Press it in a clean towel, reshape it, and leave it in an airy spot to dry, usually overnight. Then use it dry again.
How often to wash it
- Liquid or cream foundation: every 2 to 3 uses.
- Powder: a little less often. Powder is gentler on it.
- The Mini sponges: the same as the OG. They work hard under your eyes and around your nose.
Keep it in good shape
- Let it dry fully before you put it away.
- Store it somewhere open and airy, away from steam.
- Use gentle cleansers only. Harsh detergents wear the velour down.
- Let it air dry at room temperature. Direct heat can damage it.
When to replace it
A sponge that’s looked after can last up to 6-12 months. Signs it’s time for a new one:
- It doesn’t bounce back after you squeeze it.
- Makeup stays in it, even after washing.
- The surface feels rough or tacky.
- It has torn or the stitching has come loose.
Quick questions
Do I wash it if I always use it dry? Yes. Using it dry is about how it blends. Washing is about keeping it clean.
Can I use it straight after washing? Wait until it’s completely dry. Then it’s ready to go.
What about CloudRounds? They’re machine washable in a wash bag on a gentle cycle, or you can hand wash them with a gentle cleanser. Rinse well and let them air dry.
And Porify? Rinse it under warm water with a little gentle cleanser after each use, then let it air dry.
