It started with foundation that wouldn't sit right.
Since my teens, putting on foundation was always a hassle. Brushes left streaks. Sponges soaked up my product. It never looked the way I wanted.
Years later I was living in China, doing an online makeup course. I was still having the same problem. I tried every brush and sponge I could find.
Then a sample arrived in a different material. It blew me away. My foundation finally sat right.
I turned to my fiancé, Theunis, and said: "I think we have a business."
From one sponge to four tools
We found a factory that could hand-stitch it and adjust it until it was right. Together with Theunis's brother Francois, we started Blend & Snap in Cape Town in 2022. We started with one sponge, the OG. Today there are four tools:
- The OG Sponge is for blending your whole face.
- The Mini Sponges are for the small places: under your eyes and around your nose.
- Porify is a prep tool for your skin before makeup.
- CloudRounds remove your makeup.
Our sponges are used dry. They work with liquid, cream and powder.
The name
We found it on the couch, watching Legally Blonde. The "Bend and Snap" scene became Blend & Snap.
Why we keep going
Women send me messages on WhatsApp. They tell me they always thought they couldn't do their own makeup. Now they feel confident. I know that feeling. It's why we started.
